If your Hungarian passport / ID card has been destroyed, stolen or lost, it must be reported to a Hungarian authority authorised to accept applications for new documents. Notifying the authorities is extremely important, as the travel documents (or the data they contain) could be misused and cause serious inconvenience to the rightful owner.

On the basis of the report, the competent authority will register the document as lost, stolen or destroyed and the Schengen Information System will automatically be alerted.

Please report your stolen passport to your local police station first, and if you receive a police record, please attach it (however, you cannot report a lost document to the police). Some police stations will not give you a report, only a reference number. If a report was not taken by the local police, the document holder must declare this during the report filing at the Consulate.

Reports at our Consulate General can be filed in person either by the owner of the document in question or by their legal representative (i.e. parent, guardian). To submit your application and apply for a new document, please book an appointment for „Report of stolen or lost passport/ID + replacement” at the online appointment booking system.  Click here for more information on applying for a new passport or ID card.

A report of the theft or loss of the document will be made at the consulate. If possible, we will ask for a police report of the theft or a crime number.

In addition to the passport or ID, lost, stolen or damaged driving licences and address cards can also be reported.

You may file a report regarding a lost, stolen or destroyed travel document online, using the so called Webes Ügysegéd service.  Should you choose this option, you must also request the replacement of the travel document at the same time. Replacement can only be done if the applicant has consented for their fingerprints to be managed (stored) at the time they applied for the original document. The validity of the new document will be exactly the same as that of the original one, meaning that all the data content (except for the document number and the date of issue) will be the same as well.

If you do not have time to wait for your passport to arrive from Hungary, you can apply for a temporary passport. For details, click here.

Found travel documents

Should you find your document after it was already reported as lost or stolen, you need to notify one of the competent authorities by filling the form below.

You can notify the authorities the same way as you reported your document (see, previous section). Please note that the ID card cannot be reported electronically.

The local government office, a consul and the passport office with general competence will immediately act regarding changing the document status electronically.

Please note, however, that in our experience, travelling with documents reported as found often causes problems, which may also be due to the fact that the finding was not entered into the system in time. The best solution is to apply for a new document instead of using the found document.
