How to apply

The application may only be submitted in person. Both parents need to be present to apply to have a minor's name changed.

Appointments shall be booked using our online booking system. Please select “Change of name”.

Please note that the whole registration procedure takes on average 2-4 months, but the Consulate cannot guarantee the length of the procedure. There is no fast-track procedure. Thus, we do not recommend e.g. to book any tickets on your new name until you receive the documents.

How much does it cost?

Consular fees are listed here. Please note that we are a cashless office, card payment only!

In some cases, when it comes to a change of birth name, an additional 10 000 HUF must be paid in advance for the relevant Hungarian authority (Government Office of the Capital City Budapest - Budapest Főváros Kormányhivatala). For more information on this, please contact us at konz.man@mfa.gov.hu.

Change of birth name

The change of a birth family and/or given name(s) of a Hungarian citizen is subject to the approval of the Minister of Interior. Thus, you cannot apply for a passport in your new name at the same time.

The change of a family name of a parent affects all minor children with the same family name unless explicitly asked otherwise. If the spouse has a married name that includes the family name the change is requested for, the change will affect the married name too. Both parents shall consent to the change of the name of a minor unless one of the parents does not have parental custody. If your child is grown-up, he or she should apply for a name change in his or her own right.

The civil registrar can once change the given name(s) of the child upon the request of both parents. It is also the civil registrar who is responsible if the request is for changing the order or given names or abandoning one of the given names.

Documents to be submitted

  • Your original birth certificate (and marriage certificate, if applicable). You will be issued new certificates after your change of name is registered.
  • Please also bring your valid Hungarian documents (passport, ID card, address card). We will make copies of these and give them back to you.
  • If you have already changed your name in the UK by deed poll, please bring the original deed poll with Hungarian translation.

The translation can be prepared by a UK-based Hungarian translator or even the applicants themselves. In this case, there is an extra consular authentication fee in addition. The translation could also be prepared by the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd (OFFI) – in this case, it does not need to be further legalized.

  • If you have any non-Hungarian documents already issued in this name (e.g. British passport, driving license) please bring these as well.
  • Filled in, but not yet signed application form - please fill in the form with a blue ink pen, in block capitals.

Change of married name

A Hungarian citizen can have his or her married name changed during the marriage or after the marriage is dissolved, even on multiple occasions.

ATTENTION! If your name change is due to a marriage conducted abroad, you do not need to change your name. In this case, you have to register your marriage first, as part of which your married name will be changed!

Can I apply for a passport with my new name at the same time?

Yes, you may apply for a new passport reflecting your new married name, however, it will not be issued until the change is registered. Please also note that if you wish to apply for a passport, you have to book a slot for the passport application as well.
