A concert celebrating the work of Hungarian poet Sándor Weöres and featuring the world-renowned Hungarian soprano Katalin Károlyi was held on 5 October in Salford.

Alongside percussionist Tim Williams and pianist Lauryna Sableviciute, the performers gave the world premiere of two new pieces (The Motionless Movement-After Weöres and Weöres Equations) by Salford Universitiy’s composer Prof. Alan Williams setting texts by Weöres. Every Hungarian knows Weöres: this was a rare insight into a fascinating world of the imagination little known outside Hungary.

During the evening Prof. Alan Williams introduced Weöres’s unique oeuvre to the audience, read poems both in Hungarian and in English emphasizing the influence the poet had on other Hungarian composers. Among the works inspired by Weöres, the song cycles of György Orbán (Nine songs to Weöres poems) and György Ligeti (Three Weöres songs) were performed by Katalin Károlyi and pianist Layrina Sableviciuute. The concert was supported by the Consulate General of Hungary in Manchester.
