Introduction
The Hungarian passport authority (Belügyminisztérium - Ministry of Interior) issues biometric passports with electronically scanned fingerprints for applicants aged more than 12 years old. Fingerprints will be taken electronically at the time of the application. Therefore, passport applications must be submitted in person as a general rule. If you consent to have your fingerprints stored in a database in Hungary as well, and your are over 18 years old, you will be able to apply for a replacement passport online in case your passport is lost, stolen, or damaged.
If the birth of the child has not been registered in Hungary, you can submit the application for the passport together with the application of the registration of birth. In this case you should sign a "Declaration for passport application of a minor under 6" (it can be downloaded at the bottom of the page). For further information please visit the following link: Registration of birth.
How to apply
Passport applications need to be submitted in person by prior appointment. Appointments shall be made using our online booking system.
For appointment, please select "Passport (over 18 age)" or "Passport for minors (0-18)”.
Please note that we use the same online booking system, therefore we are not able to issue earlier appointments. No fast track procedure is available at the Consulate.
How long it takes
Passport procedure is 20 days which does not include delivery from Hungary to the Consulate. Average procedure time is 5-8 weeks (including delivery to the Consulate). If you cannot prove your citizenship when applying for a passport the Consulate should start a procedure to verify your citizenship. This procedure might take up to 3-5 months as an average time but it could be much longer.
Please do not plan any journey (do not buy flight tickets, bus tickets etc.) before your passport is delivered! The Consulate cannot guarantee that the passport is delivered within the above-mentioned average procedure time.
Fees
Consular fees are listed here. These vary e.g. on the basis of the length of the validity of the required passport, and – in case of minor applicants – also on the basis of the number of minors within the family (declaration on the number of children can an be downloaded at the bottom of the page).
Please note that we are a cashless office, card payment only!

Special requirements for minors
a) under the age of 6:
In the case of a passport application of a child under the age of 6, the Hungarian parent who can prove his or her citizenship should sign a statement, on the basis of which the Hungarian citizenship of the child will be presumed. (Declaration for a passport application for a minor under 6 can be downloaded at the bottom of the page).
The registration of the child's birth has to be initiated in parallel with the passport application.
b) in general:
• the application should be submitted by the parents/person(s) with parental responsibility;
• if only one of the parents has parental responsibility he/she should duly verify his/her right to act on behalf of the child (e.g. with relevant court order, death certificate, birth certificate);
• one of the parents may apply for the passport alone in the possession of the written consent from the other (absent) parent witnessed by two witnesses, or his or her signature on the consent may be authenticated by a Hungarian honorary consul, a Hungarian consul, or by a Hungarian passport issuing authority, a Hungarian notary public, or a Hungarian guardianship office. (The form of the parental consent can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.) Please fill in the form with a blue ink pen. Please note that the parental written consent can be accepted within 15 days from the date of signature. The consent can also be given online by the absent parent in the so-called Client Settings Register (Rendelkezési Nyilvántartás). This electronic service works with any of the electronic identification services (Client Gate, electronic ID card, phone identification). More information on this can be found here in Hungarian.
• valid passport or ID of both parents;
• Hungarian birth certificate of the child;
• 1 passport photo if the child is under 12 (a child under the age of 12 does not have to be present at the time of the application).
